Tributes are being paid to a young woman killed in a single car crash in county Tyrone.

Caoimhe O'Brien, who's believed to be in her twenties, was from the Douglas Bridge area..

She died in a collision close to Burndennett Bridge on the Victoria Road shortly before midnight last night.

The young care worker studied at Sacred Heart College in Omagh.

Vice Principal Cecilia McGinn paid tribute to her former pupil:

"It's with great regret that the principal and staff of Sacred Heart College have learnt of the tragic death of Caoimhe.

"She completed her Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 education at Sacred Heart nefore moving on to further education.

"Caoimhe was a bright and bubble girl at school and she had a wide circle of close friends.

"We pass on our sincere sympathies to her parents, Marie and Noel, and assure them and the family that they are in our prayers at this sad time."

MLA Daniel McCrossan is from the local community and said residents are devastated:

"Strabane, as a district is very tight-knit, we tend to know everybody, even if we have never spoken to each other.

"In particular for the rural part of the district the young woman comes from, it will hit very hard.

"It's a very small, but close community and the news today will be absolutely devastating to all within that community."

The crash involving a blue Ford Focus, was reported to police at approximately 11.50pm on Thursday night.

Sergeant Lawrence Speer said: "I would ask anyone who noticed the blue Ford Focus in the area late last night to contact Strabane Police Station or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1427 of 13/10/16."
