Strabane district residents latest target for phone scams

Police in Strabane have taken to social media to warn residents of another phone scam to follow the recent stream of phony emails and callers across Northern Ireland. 

In this case, callers were pretending to be from BT or that they were ringing to make PPI refunds. 
 

A spokesperson for the PSNI said "Unfortunately they were successful". 

They took to social media to warn local people of the scams once again stating: 

"You'll have noticed numerous entries on the Police Facebook accounts regarding ongoing scams etc and it's great that these have been shared on social media, however, if like me you have some older family members who don't even know what Facebook is, then do what I am doing. 

"Vist or call your parents, your aunt, your uncle, your friends, your elderly neighbour maybe who you know won't use social media. 

"Tell them what is happening. Warn them about these telephone scams and tell them to report them. 

"Your phone call may be all it takes to make someone more alert and save someone handing over their life savings to some fraudster."
 

However, people are also reminded that the majority of calls are genuine, but precautionary measures should be taken to "protect the more vulnerable" in society.
