A local councillor has praised the swift actions of NI Water after raw sewage leaked into the gardens of a number of homes in Derry - Londonderry.

Homes in the Mary Street and Fergusons Lane area of Bishop Street in the city centre were affected.

Councillor Logue said:

“I was contacted by residents from Mary Street and Fergusons Lane concerned that raw sewage had entered the backyards of their homes .

"There was sewage in the yards, on the footpaths and road .I don’t need to tell anyone the health concerns this brings never mind the mess.

"I would like to thank NI Water for their quick response in dealing with the matter. It turned out a much bigger job than was first expected, a lot of digging was needed to get to the root of the problem.

"Its hoped that this work will resolve the issue. The pathways and the road will be disinfected once the work is finished."
