Police have been granted an extra 36 hours to question a 26-year-old man following the murder of a man in Newcastle.
The body of 29-year-old Padraig Fox was found in the Burrendal Park Road area at the weekend.
Police launched the murder probe on Monday, and a 21-year-old man remains in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Peter McKenna, who is leading the investigation, said: “Police received a report at 1:45pm on Saturday (8th December) that the body of a man had been discovered at a flat.
“Following a post mortem examination I am now treating this death as murder."
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath said :‘The death in Newcastle will come as a complete shock to the community.
"News has filtered through over the weekend that a person has passed away in suspicious circumstances and is being investigated as a murder.
"Such news always sends a chill through the community."
DCI McKenna continued: “I am appealing to anyone with any information which may assist my investigation to call detectives on 101, quoting reference number 712 of 08/12/18.
“Alternatively information can be passed to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
