Plans to develop a new play area in Curryneirin have moved one step closer to reality.

Derry City and Strabane District Council's Environment and regeneration committee endorsed the project last night.

The green space would include a play park as well as an open area for community events.

Councillor Christopher Jackson said:

"The recommendation to endorse the project was passed at the Environment and regeneration committee with a commitment that council officers will continue to work to explore funding opportunities to progress this project.

"This proposal is much more than a play park, it is an integral part in the regeneration of the whole area, providing play facilities, a safe area for ball games and a much needed events space for community activities.

"Outdoor play facilities are an integral part of every community, encouraging children away from TVs and games consoles and become active."

The decision will go before a meeting of the full council later in the month.
