Over a dozen cars set on fire in Co Armagh arson attack

Over a dozen cars were set alight during an arson attack on business premises in Newtownhamilton this morning.  

Two men wearing balaclavas were spotted leaving the scene in a black Toyota Avensis on Forkhill Road at around 2.15am.

Around 15 cars parked in the area at the time and some of them were completely destroyed. 

Fire and Rescue crews attended the scene and extinguished the blaze which is being treated as deliberate.

Newry Mourne and Down councillor Liz Kimmins has strongly condemned the attack.

“This disgraceful act of premeditated criminality has shocked the local community. Anyone with any information about this incident should contact the Police as a matter of urgency,” she said. 

Police have appealed for information about the incident. 

"Shortly before 2:15am, it was reported that around 15 cars parked in the area were on fire. Two men wearing balaclavas were seen leaving the area and made off in a black Toyota Avensis," a PSNI spokesperson said 

"Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire.  

"Damage was caused to the vehicles involved and the incident is being treated as deliberate ignition.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and police would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 125 31/12/19.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
