One driver has been arrested during a major road safety operation in Derry.

The joint operation by the PSNI and the Driver Vehicle Agency (DVA) was rolled out on Lower Strand Road last night.

Officers used new powers to carry out over sixty random check point breath tests in a bid to catch drink drivers.

The new legislation means the PSNI can set-up solely for the purpose of carrying out random breath tests.

Previously, police officers needed a reasonable suspicion about the manner of someone’s driving, have seen a moving traffic offence, or been called to a collision before requiring a preliminary breath test from a driver.

Meanwhile, officials carried out roadside vehicle safety testing during the operation.
