Derry City and Strabane District Council deny that vandals are to blame for the removal of relics and monuments at Ballyoan Cemetery in Derry – Londonderry.
A number of complaints were made after it was discovered the items were missing from a small number of graves in the waterside cemetery.
However, a spokesperson has confirmed that they were removed by Council grounds staff who were carrying out routine grass cutting and maintenance at the graveyard on Tuesday.
The spokesperson explained
“Due to inclement weather conditions at the time, [staff] were unable to complete the works or reinstate the relics to the graves.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and upset caused and endeavour to do what we can today to redress the issue.
“We are very mindful of the fact that the Cemetery is a place of rest and we will continue to work to ensure the area is kept clean, tidy and safe for the public to visit.”
Despite the explanation Councillor David Ramsey said the work has caused damage to some graves.
He added:
"I will arrange a meeting and lead a small deputation to council of families angered by the issues with maintenance of the Ballyowen cemetery and damage to some graves.
"This has led to much anger and we must make sure this doesn't happen again."
