Launch of firework billboard at Free Derry Wall

by Gráinne Connolly

A new billboard highlighting the dangers of fireworks has been launched this week by Community Restorative Justice (CRJ).

The placard erected at the Free Derry Wall in the Bogside showcases graphic images of the damages fireworks can cause.

Q Radio's been speaking to Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell who attended the launch and he is happy to welcome it to the area.

He says the images send a very "stark" message and hopes it reaches young people:

As Councillor Kevin Campbell mentions there's very serious images of a dog and a child who sadly suffered the effects of a firework.

The Derry Councillor based in The Moor ward has also warned sellers of fireworks of their responsibility that they owe to their community.

"This community is a very strong, resilient community, it's come through a lot of hard times over the last 30/40 years and we do not need this.

"We're appealing to people to stay away from this type of thing and not to be buying them off the internet or anywhere else.

"Those that are selling them, if they're found out they will be facing the law".

The posters were also given to local schools to remind them of the dangers and which will hopefully show them the effects of misusing them first hand.
