To mark Mental Health Week for Young People, which runs from 5th to 11th February, local schools across the Derry City and Strabane Council (DCSDC) area are being encouraged to host their own 'Mood Walk'.

It's in conjunction with local charity AWARE, that delivers programmes to young people about the importance of looking after their mental health and encouraging them to seek help if they feel they are struggling.

A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council has said:

"Walking is one of the best ways to improve your mental health, which is why the Mood Walk events are so positive and enjoyable.

"Indeed, pupils are also encouraged to wear something bright for the walk or have their faces painted with bright colours.

"The Mood Walk can be a 3k or 5k – the length and route is entirely up to your school – and each pupil will be asked to donate £2 and for the whole school to raise as much money as possible – which will go towards educating and supporting young people in your local area."

Mayor for DCSDC, Maolíosa McHugh says he's delighted that schools have already signed up for their Mood Walk and is hoping that others will do the same, not only to raise awareness of mental health but also the work that AWARE do:

To register for the Mood Walk you can contact Karen Henderson, Mayoral and Member Services Officer on 028 71 376 257 or email - karen.henderson@derrystrabane.com

Following the Mood Walk, Mayor McHugh will also be inviting representatives from the schools that take part to a Mayor's Reception in the Guildhall, Derry-Londonderry, to give them the chance to make donations to AWARE and celebrate taking part.
