The Justice Minister in Northern Ireland says it is "quite clear" there will be enforcement to ensure people here comply with covid-19 regulations, but that there is also an opportunity for people to help drive down the curve in coronavirus cases without it.

Earlier this week, the Stormont Executive agreed to increase fines from £60 to £200 for breaching coronavirus regulations.

It has also extended the number of places where masks will be compulsory.

Naomi Long said it's hoped the new measures will act as a deterrent for those refusing to comply with regulations.

However, she said it wasn't the only matter she wanted to focus on, as there were simple measures everyone can take to make a difference in the fight against covid-19.

"I think it is important that when it comes to enforcement, the penalty reflects the risk that people are placing themselves, their family and friends in when they choose not to comply with the regulations.

"But I don't think we should focus only on enforcement.

"There is an opportunity here through collective effort, just as we did in the spring to bring this under control, to be able to drive under the curve, protect those around us, protect the health service and make a real difference.

The Alliance Party leader added, "It's the washing your hands, when you're going to cough or sneeze - use a tissue, catch it, bin it kill - all the basics.

"Making sure you stay two metres apart from people and limiting your social contact.

"If we do this, if we're persistent and consistent in how we do it, I believe we shouldn't despair. We can actually make a huge difference.

"Enforcement is just one of the options we have, the vast majority of people do want to comply."

The Justice Minister said she recognised the regulations can be confusing and are ever changing.

However, Mrs Long said it is "quite clear" from previous figures relating to fixed penalty notices already issued by PSNI, there will be enforcement.

Therefore, she is urging people to take simple steps to adjust to new regulations and to comply with regulations.

"We've got to be sustainable in our approach, we've got to give people the opportunity to make changes to the way they live their lives because we are going to have covid with us for the foreseeable future.

"I think it is important to find new ways of working that can keep people safe and particularly to protect those who are vulnerable."
