A fire at a block of flats in Newcastle in county Down is being treated as "suspicious".

Firefighters pulled a 35 year old man to safety through a window.

The man who's believed to be deaf, was asleep at his friend's flat when the blaze broke out and wasn't alerted when the alarm was raised.

He was treated at the scene as a precaution.

A large oil tank and shed fire has now been brought under control.

The blaze broke out on the Burrendale Park Road just before 4am on Thursday morning.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Investigations are continuing but initial reports suggest the outbreak may have been arson.

.SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie says if that is the case it is worrying:

"I would urge anyone with any relevant information to contact the Police immediately.

This is a wanton and reckless act which could have endangered lives.

I am concerned about the effects such acts have on the community and I would like to thank the emergency services for their efforts in dealing with this situation”.
