Investigation into Bobby Storey funeral expected to be "an additional number of weeks"

An independent investigation into the cremation of veteran republican Bobby Storey is still not complete. 

The funeral took place on 30th June at Roselawn Crematorium. 

An investigation was launched in mid-September and was expected to take around six weeks. 

However, Belfast City Councillors have been told it is likely to "be an additional number of weeks before the report" by barrister Peter Coll QC is ready. 

The probe is examining events surrounding the cremation of Bobby Storey at the cemetery and why Mr Storey's relatives were treated differently to eight other families whose loved ones were cremated on the same day. 

Up to 30 people were allowed to attend the Storey funeral but the same access was denied to the other families.

The council has since apologised. 

A Belfast City Council spokesperson said,

"Council can confirm that Party Group Leaders have been advised by Peter Coll QC that it is likely to be an additional number of weeks before the report on the independent investigation being carried out into events surrounding the cremation of Bobby Storey at Roselawn Cemetery will be available.

"The investigation began on 11 September 2020 and under the terms of reference, was expected to take six weeks.

"Most of the investigatory work is complete, however Party Group Leaders have been advised that it will take some time to consider and write up a report.

"Once complete, the findings will be presented to Elected Members and will be made publicly available.

"Council will not be making any further comment while the investigation is ongoing."
