From today onwards (Monday), a sticker will be placed on black bins for householders in the Derry City and Strabane District.
It will inform residents in the area that they can no longer dispose of food waste in these bins.
Instead, it will have to be deposited in to a food caddy bin that has or is still to be provided to houses in the area.
The food caddy bin scheme is being introduced as a measure to improve recycling and composting rates, reduce costs and help the council provide householders with better services.
Over 30,000 residents have been given the new bins, where 20,000 households are yet to receive theirs.
The council hopes to have them all distributed by autumn of this year.
For those who have their food caddy bins, their other bins will be inspected by refuse collection staff, starting May.
Any bins found with food waste in them, will not be collected.
