A hammer has been held to the head of a one-year-old child during a burglary in east Belfast.

Four men broke into a property in Mayflower Street, shortly before 8.30 last night.

Police say it was a terrifying incident for the woman and young children who live there.

A PSNI spokesperson said: ''Police are appealing for witnesses following an aggravated burglary at a property in Mayflower Street in East Belfast shortly before 8.30pm.

''It is understood four males forced their way into the property occupied by a woman and her young children.''
