A go fund me page set up for Danny Payne, who was the victim of an assault in Derry-Londonderry, has raised over 3 times its initial target.

Danny was left in a critical condition after he was attacked in the city last Sunday.

It's understood that he's currently being treated for his injuries in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Since the attack, a 19 year old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is due in court next month.

An 18 year old woman was also arrested but has been released pending a report to prosecutors.

A friend of Danny's, Craig Gardiner has set up a 'gofundme' page to raise money for his family as they go through this time.

He posted on the page:

"As most of you already know Danny was the victim of a vicious assault in early hours of Sunday 22nd October in Londonderry city centre.

"Anybody that knows Danny knows he is an absolute gentleman with a heart of gold, he has been heavily involved in charity work within our city for a number of years, giving time out of his own life to help others in need.

"I've set this page up to try and generate some funds to help the family of Danny with travel expenses to and from Belfast, loss of earnings and generally just to try and ease the burden of money at this difficult time.

"Please donate, I know Danny and I know he'd be the first to help others when in need. Thank you."

An initial target of £1000 was set, however in less than 1 week, people have donated over 3 times that and is now sitting at £3,345.

Yesterday (26th October) it was posted:

"The fund has just past the £3000 mark, to say am delighted is an understatement.

"To treble the intended goal is unbelievable and I want to say a personal thank you to each and every one of you that has kindly donated.

"I know how much this will help Danny’s family in the next coming weeks and months. Thank you all very much for your support."

Many people are showing Danny and his family support at this time, including those involved with the '#getjackback' campaign:
