Tributes are being paid to the former catholic Bishop of Derry Edward Daly who's died at the age of 82.

His remains will be welcomed back to his old Parish of St.Eugene's Cathedral this evening, ahead of his funeral on Thursday.

Bishop Daly was famously pictured waving a blood stained white hankerchief at the British Army in 1972.

The image of him helping a fatally injured victim of Bloody Sunday was broadcast around the world.

It now forms part of a mural in the city's Bogside area.

At 18.45 on Monday his remains will be welcomed to the Cathedral - before several days of special masses.

He was appointed Bishop of Derry in 1974 but was forced to retire in 1994 after suffering a stroke.

A Book of Condolence is open in the Guildhall in Derry to mark the sad passing.

Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness said "Bishop Daly is remembered internationally for the iconic image from Bloody Sunday when he was waving a white flag to British soldiers while aiding the dying Jackie Duddy.

“But he was also an immense figure in the city.

“He was very forthright in his views at a time when a war was raging in the city but thankfully he also lived to see the peace.

“I met with him on a number of occasions in 1992 and 1993 about the developing peace process and he was always compassionate, honest and backed the efforts of me and others to help bring the conflict to an end.

Daly, a Donegal native, had written a book about his life in the church.

He also served as a chaplin of the Foyle Hospice and received the freedom of the city of Derry in 2015.
