Police were called to disperse a large crowd that gathered at a beach in Bangor at the weekend.

Groups were attending a charity swimming challenge at Helen's Bay yesterday when some participants and members of the public say they were asked to leave the beach.

Officers say they engaged with those in attendance, who later left the area - and encouraged members of the public to comply with the current coronavirus regulations.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Our approach has been that we will engage, explain and encourage members of the community to comply with the Health Protection Regulations. The vast majority of our community are complying with the restrictions, which we all recognise, are asking people to restrict their personal and professional lives in a way none of us would ever have thought possible.

"While enforcement is our last resort, we have not, and will not, shy away from enforcement when it is necessary.

No fines were issued.
