Two education bodies have come together and indicated their support for a common transfer test.
Currently, the AQE and PPTC run separate exams for children aged 10 and 11 and young people can choose to sit either test, both of them or none at all.
However, in a joint statement the organisations say they're eager to work together to find a way forward for pupils, parents and schools.
Education Minister Peter Weir says he welcomes the interest from the two education bodies. He says the organisations have claimed they hoe to see the proposals put in place for the 2019 test.
Mr Weir says it is the best "opportunity in a generation" to find a solution to school transfers.
