Footpaths surrounding St Eugene's Cathedral are set to benefit from a £380,000 upgrade.

Grey granite stone will be used to pave streets around the Grade B+ listed cathedral on the periphery of Derry city centre.

The project will see pathways on Infirmary Road, Francis Street, Creggan Street and upper Great James Street upgraded.

The body of work includes replacing a section of the existing railings between the footway and the carriageway on Infirmary Road, installing new pedestrian railings at the junction of Creggan Road and Marlborough Street and works to the cobblestones at the entrance to the Cathedral.

Paving at the entrance to the newly regenerated Brooke Park will also be improved.

Funding for the public realm scheme has been provided by the Department for Communities.

Minister Paul Givan said:

“I am delighted to announce my Department’s funding in this historic conservation area of Londonderry. The new high quality paving will complement the recently renovated Brooke Park as well as public realm works carried out by my Department in nearby streets.

“Many towns and cities have recently benefited from regeneration projects like this and I look forward to seeing a similar transformation in this part of the city, making it a more attractive, welcoming place to live, work and visit.”

Work is to begin in the coming weeks and is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2017.
