The Irish Government has officially recognised the Traveller communityas an ethnic group.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny made an historic speech in the Dáil saying it will help families have a better future with less negativity, exclusion and marginalisation.
Mr.Kenny referred to a "deep and personal issue", after a long-running campaign helping the Travelling Community to have their identity recognised.
He was cheered by fellow TD's who gave a standing ovation during the announcement.
"No one should have to hide their culture to be respected in society," he said.
"I hope today will create a new platform for positive engagement with the government and the Travelling Community.
