New rules at home and in the hospitality sector

New coronavirus restrictions are being introduced in Northern Ireland in a bid to combat rising case numbers.

Indoor standing events are no longer permitted and nightclubs are closed from Boxing Day.

From Monday, socialising will be reduced to three households while up to six people can meet in pubs, bars and restaurants.

Ten people will be allowed if they are from the same household. Only table service will be available.

A two metre social distancing rule will be in place in public premises and offices.

The chief medical officer in the Republic of Ireland has urged people to reduce their contacts as Covid-19 cases soar.

Dr Tony Holohan was speaking as Ireland recorded a new record high number of daily cases on Christmas Day.

A further 13,765 cases of the virus were notified yesterday, up from 11,182 cases announced on Friday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has yet to announce any further rules for England but indicated he will not hesitate to act after Christmas if required amid rising cases of the Omicron variant.
