Mid-Ulster has the highest household recycling rate in Northern Ireland.
Provisional figures released for the last financial year show that almost 50 per cent of waste collected was recycled.
The EU has set a recycling target – all councils must reach 50 per cent by 2020.
Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Clement Cuthbertson, praised people for their recycling efforts:
“To be placed first for the entire year over 10 other council areas is an astonishing achievement.
“This emphasises and fully reinforces the great work the council is doing to promote recycling, the importance of fully utilising our blue and brown bins and the numerous recycling facilities available to residents across the district. It’s up to all of us now to maintain this high standard and to try to reduce the amount of waste we create in the first place,” he says.
