A young person has died following a one vehicle road traffic collision near Ballymoney in north Antrim.

The crash involving a blue Peugeot 207 happened on the Ballybogey Road shortly after 6am this morning.

Police say the man died at the scene, as a result of his injuries.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service were called to the scene at around 6.10am.

Following assessment and treatment at the scene, no one was taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, MLA Mervyn Storey expressed sympathies to the victim's family.

He said, "Sadly this morning a young person lost their life as a result of an accident on the Ballybogey Road at the junction of the Tullaghgore Road.

"I want to express my sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased. As with all such accidents on our roads, we have another family plunged into sorrow.

"We also are mindful of the emergency services who attend such tragic incidents. We say a word of thanks and appreciation for their response."

Police say the Ballybogey Road remains closed at its junctions with Frosses Road and Tullaghgore Road following the crash and diversions are in place.
