Mother and 11 year old daughter rescued from water after fall from ferry

A woman and an 11 year old girl, understood to be mother and daughter, have been rescued from the water at Belfast Harbour after going overboard a ferry. 

The incident happened on the Stena Horizon ferry at around 6.45pm yesterday on its approach to dock at the harbour, which was arriving from Liverpool. 

Stena line said it deployed emergency response crews from its ferry and from another one of its vessels nearby. 

The pair were rescued from the water and were attended to by local emergency services who were waiting at the dockside in Belfast. 

They were taken to hospital for treatment. 

An investigation is underway to establish how they fell into the water. 

In a statement, Stena Line said it has informed all relevant authorities of the incident as is currently assisting with various investigations now under way. 

A PSNI statement said, "A woman and 11-year-old girl were rescued after having apparently entered the water as a ferry approached Belfast Dock last night (Thursday 25 February).

"The full circumstances of the incident are still being established."

Meanwhile Belfast Harbour said, “Both females were safely recovered from the water and taken to hospital by emergency services,” police said.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said the full circumstances of the incident were still to be established.
