Two new cases of Coronavirus in NI bringing total to 20

Two new presumed positive cases of Coronavirus have been confirmed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total to 20. 

Both cases are adults and were both secondary transmissions. 

The Department of Health said one case involved recent travel from Northern Italy and the other can be traced to a previously reported case in the UK.

The Public Health Agency is currently undertaking contact tracing for both cases.

In Northern Ireland there have been 279 concluded tests, of which 259 were negative, and 20 were positive.

Meanwhile, in the Republic of Ireland Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced schools, colleges and childcare facilities are to close for the next 14 days in an attempt to combat COVID-19. 

The UK government is expected to step up its response to the infection. 

A number of events are being affected by the outbreak of coronavirus. 

The GAA has announced its suspending all activity until 29th March at all levels.

It issued the following joint statement alongside the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and An Cumann Camógaíochta.

"In light of this morning’s Government announcement, the GAA, An Cumann Camógaíochta and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association have decided to suspend all activity at club, inter-county and educational levels until March 29 (inclusive) from midnight.

"This is to include all games, training and team gatherings at all ages and all grades.

"We will continue to liaise with Government officials and review the situation between now and the end of the month, assessing the impact of these measures on our competitions.
"In the meantime, the Association is encouraging all members to continue to follow the guidelines which have been provided by the health authorities."

Management at Down Royal Racecourse has also announced the Saint Patrick's Day race meeting will take place behind closed doors.

Emma Meehan, Chief Executive of Down Royal Racecourse said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused; however the health and safety of racegoers is our priority.

"Only runners, riders and trainers will be in attendance, with turnstiles closed to racegoers. Ticketholders will automatically receive a full refund within 14 working days.”
