A security alert in Derry-Londonderry has now ended.

Twenty-six families were evacuated from their homes in the Creggan area this morning.

A suspicious object was discovered, and reported to police by residents.

Officers sealed off Balbane Pass and part of Rinmore Drive, as Army Technical Officers checked out the device.

The item was believed to be a bucket with a gas canister inside, which was set alight in the early hours of the morning

It was declared an elaborate hoax, and has been taken away for further examination.
