Police received a report of a group of youths who had gathered and an ongoing disturbance in the Duncairn Parade area of North Belfast last night, Saturday 24 March.

Inspector Keith Hutchinson said: “At around 7:20pm, it was reported that between 20-30 youths were in the area, and a male was being attacked by a group of three males. When police arrived at the scene, the youths had dispersed.

Police subsequently engaged with a local community representative to check on the welfare of the man who was reportedly attacked.

Later in the evening, at around 8:30pm, police received a report that a bin was on fire in the Victoria Parade area of North Queen Street. While officers were in the area, a police vehicle was damaged.

No officers were injured.

Police have urged parents within these areas to monitor the activities of their children. Know where they are. Know what they’re doing.”

Sinn Féin Councillor JJ Magee has praised the efforts of youth outreach workers in the New Lodge area who worked to quell incidents of anti-social behaviour involving a small number of local youths.

JJ Magee said:

“A number of youths, some as young as 14 years of age engaged in anti-social activity, burning bins, vandalising property and throwing stones at the PSNI at the bottom of Victoria Parade in the New Lodge.

“The Fire Service was also called to the area. This call-out diverts a vital emergency service away from its primary role and could put others at serious risk.

“I want to praise the efforts of youth outreach workers who worked with the young people in an effort to quell the trouble and the area is now quiet.

“There are local children being put at serious risk by the actions of a small and unrepresentative minority and I appeal to parents and community leaders to do all in their power to prevent any further incidents of this behaviour.”
