A planning application has been submitted to Causeway Coast & Glens Council for a proposed statue and associated paving in memory of William Dunlop.

The planning application shows the proposed location to the left of his late father's memorial statue, Robert Dunlop.

William Dunlop died after a crash during the Skerries 100 road race in Ireland, aged 32 on the 7th July 2018.  During his racing career, he accumulated 108 Irish National Road Race wins.

In addition, he also achieved numerous victories at two of Ireland's prestigious road racing events, the North West 200 (4) and the Ulster Grand Prix (7). His best results at the Isle of Man TT saw him securing the third tier on the podium on four occasions with his best result being the runner-up position in the 2016 TT Zero.

Until late 2015, Dunlop had raced for Tyco BMW Motorrad Racing campaigning the BMW S1000RR and a Suzuki GSX-R600. The 2016 season saw him competing at the main International Road Races aboard Yamaha YZF-R1 and Yamaha YZF-R6 in the Superbike and Supersport categories.

Ballymoney Councillor Darryl Wilson said. "I welcome the proposal to erect a statue of William Dunlop within the Memorial garden, close to where his father's statue is located. "The people of the Town, the Borough and beyond will always hold the members of the Dunlop Road racing dynasty close to their hearts. This will be a fitting tribute to William and will ensure that the fond memories we have of the man will endure for generations to come"
