Over 40 fire fighters have brought a blaze under control at a disused school site in Dungannon.

It's not yet known if the fire at St.Patricks Academy - was started accidentally or deliberately.

In a statement last night, a Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) Spokesperson said:

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service is currently attending a fire in a disused school premises at Killymeal Road, Dungannon.

There are 5 pumping appliances, an aerial appliance, two water tankers and a command support vehicle with a total of 43 firefighters engaged in the operation to bring the incident under control.

Members of the public are asked to stay away from the incident and to keep windows and doors shut as a precaution.

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has urged people to exercise caution as emergency.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said,

“Whether accidental or deliberate, fires are incredibly dangerous and destructive so I would urge everyone to exercise extreme caution.

“I would also like to appeal to everyone to report any suspicious activity as the deliberate lighting of fires is reckless and completely unacceptable.

She added,

“I would like to recognise the selfless efforts of the emergency services who are at the scene tackling the fire.”
