Officers discharged shots during incident involving man with gun

Police have confirmed that shots were fired by specialist officers following an incident involving a man with a gun in Co Down.

Nobody was injured during the incident in the High Street area of Bangor just before 9.30pm on Sunday.

One man has been arrested.

The Police Ombudsman has been notified about the discharge of shots.

A PSNI spokesperson said cordons have been reduced in the High Street area as police carry out investigative inquiries following the firearms incident.

The spokesperson said: “It was reported that a man with a gun was in commercial premises just before 9.30pm on Sunday May 18.

“Following a public safety operation, involving specialist officers, one man, aged in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

“Shots were fired by these specialist teams and, as is normal procedure, the office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed.

“No one was injured by these shots.”

The spokesperson added: “Inquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1763 of 18/5/25.”

Green Party councillor Barry McKee said: “I want to thank the police for their professionalism and swift response to last night’s incident in Bangor.

“Their actions helped keep the public safe, and I am thankful that no one was injured.”
