A man has died after he was hit by a car near the village of Claudy.

Police say it was 58-year-old Eamon McCafferty from Derry Londonderry.

The crash happened on the Foreglen Road at around 2am this morning.

The PSNI says the road remains shut this morning as an investigation continues at the scene.

Inspector Peter Duncan said: “We are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was travelling on the Foreglen Road at around 2am to contact us. We are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have captured dashcam footage of the man walking along the road or of the Blue Hyundai involved in the collision. Please call 101, quoting reference 154 18/08/18.”

Local Councillor, Jim McKeever has told Q Radio, "This is not something you expect, waking up on a weekend morning to hear the tragic news that someone has lost their life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all of those that were involved in the accident".
