A 54-year-old man has been arrested by officers in the Legacy Investigation Branch investigating the murder of Mr James Gibson in 1982.
The suspect who was detained area earlier remains in police custody.
Mr Gibson who was a former member of the UDR was shot by the IRA while driving a bus near Coalisland, County Tyrone.
Gibson had stopped at a crossroads to let several children leave the bus when the gunman approached and fired a number of rifle shots.
The seriously wounded 50-year-old died in a hospital, but no children were hurt.
A 21-year-old bricklayer from Coalisland received a life sentence in April 1984 for Mr. Gibson's killing.
