A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a 2-year-old girl in Dungannon. 

Police say the ambulance service attended an address in Park Avenue on Friday following reports the child sustained a serious head injury. 

The the toddler was admitted where she later died. 

A 32-year-old man remains in custody. 

Meanwhile, a post mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of the child's death. 

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said, "Our thoughts are with the child’s family, which is being supported by Family Liaison Officers.

"We will update you in due course but, at this time, there are no further details."

Michelle Gildernew, MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone told Q Radio the local community is in shock following the child's death. 

"Can I extend my condolences and that of the local community, to the mother of this little girl, to her family and to everyone who knew her. 

"This is the most devastating news that any mother can get and it is something that won't be easy to get over.

"It is absolutely heartbreaking."

"A police murder investigation is underway and that must be allowed to proceed and I would call on anyone with any information which may help those inquiries to contact the PSNI."

Meanwhile, Arlene Foster tweeted: “Another tragic death in the constituency, this time a little girl.

“Thinking of all those dealing with this awful event, and trying to make sense of it all.”
