Official figures reveal that a total of 150 Covid19 related deaths were recorded in a single week in Northern Ireland.

The fatalities occurred in the seven days up until January 22, 2021 marking the second highest weekly death toll since the pandemic began.

January 17 saw the number of people who died in a single day reach its highest peak of 34 bringing the total recorded by the Northern Ireland Statistical and Research Agency (Nisra) to 2,355.

The new figures come just a week after 169 deaths were recorded in Northern Ireland.

Of the total number of deaths 1,487 (63.1%) took place in hospital, 687 (29.2%) in care homes, 13 (0.6%) in hospices and 168 (7.1%) at residential addresses or other locations.

The total 700 deaths which have occurred in care homes and hospices involved 166 separate establishments.

The comparative number of deaths reported daily by the Department of Health up until the week ending January 22, 2021 was 1,716.

These figures are based on patients having previously tested positive for the virus, whereas the NISRA figures are based on the information entered on death certificates completed by medical professionals.

They may or may not have previously tested positive for the virus.
