A 53-year-old inmate has died at Maghaberry Prison in County Antrim.

It's understood the man was Thomas Davidson who was accused of killing his partner Kathleen Brankin last month.

The 37-year-old was found dead after being stabbed at the Swanns Bridge Glamping site near Limavady, where the couple had been staying.

Mr Davidson, from Collingward Avenue in Newtownabbey, was charged with her murder and remanded into custody after appearing before Ballymena Magistrates Court in July.

He died on Saturday at Maghaberry prison.

No details have been released about his death apart from a statement from the Department of Justice which said it is not being treated as covid related.

As with standard procedure, the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death.

Ronnie Armour, Director General of the NI Prison Service said,  "I would like to extend my sympathy, and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, to the family of the prisoner. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

Meanwhile, a PSNI spokesperson said, "Police received a report of a sudden death at of a man in Maghaberry Prison on Saturday afternoon.

"A post mortem is due to be carried out to determine the cause of death."
