The funeral will take place later of rising Monaghan GAA star Brendan Óg Duffy.

The 19-year-old was killed in a car crash at the weekend.

The teenager was driving a car which collided with another vehicle on the N2 in Clontibret at around half 11 on Saturday night.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Just hours earlier he had led his team to victory in an Ulster semi final clash.

The club described the news of his death as devastating.

A moment of silence was observed as a mark at respect at GAA matches across Ireland on Saturday.

GAA president Larry McCarthy extended his sympathies in a statement.

“It is with profound sadness that we learnt of the tragic news of the incident in Monaghan on Friday evening and on behalf of the GAA we offer our thoughts and prayers to the Duffy family and to Brendan Og’s friends and his teammates in the Monaghan Harps club and on the county U20 football panel,” he said.

“Brendan Og’s selection as captain of the county team singled him out as a special talent. We hope that his family and friends can call upon memories of him as he enjoyed life to sustain them in the difficult days ahead.”

Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.

Any road users who were travelling in the area and who may have camera footage (including dashcam) are asked to make it available to investigating Gardai.

A funeral mass will be held at St.Macartan's Cathedral in Monaghan at 11am.
