Court expected to rule tomorrow on PSNI man's appointment as Garda commissioner

Dublin's High Court is expected to rule tomorrow on whether the decision to appoint the PSNI's Deputy Chief Constable as the Republic's top officer should be reviewed.

Drew Harris is due to become Garda Commissioner next month.

However, a legal case has been lodged claiming he "lacks the independence" the role needs.

The grandson of a woman killed in the 1971 bombing of McGurk's Bar in Belfast is seeking leave for a judical review of the appointment.

Lawyers for Ciarán MacAirt told the court that giving the former RUC officer the role is a breach of Irish national security however senior counsel for the State argues it amounts to a personal opinion.

Judge Denis McDonald is expected to make a decision tomorrow morning.
