Newly released files show Gerry Adams was rumoured to have setup an SAS ambush on the IRA in County Armagh.

8 members of the Provisional IRA were shot dead after loading a 200lb bomb onto a digger and smashing it through gates at the RUC Loughgall Barracks in May 1987.

British Army Special Forces had been lying in wait and killed them all, including an innocent bystander.

One theory was that the IRA team was set up by Gerry Adams himself.

Newly-released state papers from Dublin also claim to show the Sinn Fein President was working on a peace plan early in 1987.

Mr. Adams has chosen not to comment on the contents of the file.

A Sinn Fein spokesperson says the claims are "utter nonsense."
