9 more people have died in Northern Ireland after contracting covid-19, according to latest figures from the Department of Health.

It brings the department's death toll according to 2,287.

A further 2,397 positive cases have been confirmed in the past 24 hours from 6.459 tests.

That represents the highest number of daily cases ever recorded in the region.

Meanwhile, there are currently 388 people being treated in hospital with the virus, 47 of whom are in ICU.

The Department has also administered 2,395,542 vaccines in total.

Earlier, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency has reported 34 deaths involving covid-19 occurred in the region last week.

NISRA's total of fatalities that occurred up to the 13th August has now reached 3,100.

In comparison the Department reported 2,247 deaths during the same period.

The difference is due to the way in which the two bodies record their data.
