The new UUP leader is going to be chosen much sooner than expected.

It was originally planned that Robin Swann would be replaced early next year at the Party AGM.

However in a statement released last night, it seems a choice will now be made on November 9th.

Mr.Swann said the decision was taken 'after speaking with family and close colleagues'.

South Antrim MLA Steve Aiken says he will put his name forward for the role but is the only one to declare so far.

Upper Bann MLA Doug Beattie is considering it, but hasn't made any formal announcement.

Some commentators had speculated that former Leader Mike Nesbitt might run again, however he's since ruled himself out.
