Currie takes over after 5 years at Ards

The 44-year-old intends to bring in new talent in the transfer window

A sleeping giant of Irish League football has a new man at the helm.

Niall Currie was Monday night confirmed as Portadown manager on an 18-month contract.

The 44-year-old takes over at his home town club after five years in charge of Danske Bank Premiership rivals Ards.

The Ports are 13 points adrift at the bottom of the table, and ultimately he wants to see the glory days back at Shamrock Park.

Currie says he intends to bring in new blood during next month's transfer window.

He wants to add to his options up front, even though the basement club can only sign amateur players due to Irish FA disciplinary action.

Currie has immediately recalled ex-Linfield striker Mark McAllister after former boss Pat McGibbon axed him from the first team squad.

Meanwhile, Ards say they have received some compensation for Currie's departure but there will be further discussions between the clubs.

First team coach John Bailie will continue as Ards caretaker manager until a permanent appointment is made.
