Championships run from today until Sunday the 9th, showcasing some of the best British and Irish competitors

The Surf Kayak Championships begin today in Portrush's east strand  The event Incorporates both Home Internationals and the British Championships.

The competition showcases surf kayakers from the UK and Ireland in both team and individual events  This event is billed as a lead in to the Surf Kayak World Championships, which will also be held in Portrush next year

It is organised by the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) and is receiving support from Causeway Coast and Glens Council.  District Mayor Ald. Maura Hickey said that she was "delighted" to support the event, adding that it should prove to be an excellent boost to tourism in the area.

CANI’s Development Manager Ashley Hunter said that "Portrush has a great reputation among the Surf Kayak fraternity."  The event runs until Sunday the 9th October and gives competitors the chance to test out Portrush's waters ahead of next years's World Championship
