Since bars were permitted to reopen on 3rd July, PSNI officers have issued 23 prohibition notices for breaches of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2020.

Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd said: “Our officers continue to engage with licensees across Northern Ireland to ensure they are adhering to their responsibilities as required under the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) Regulations NI 2020.

“The notices were served between 8th July and yesterday (2nd September) to premises in counties Derry/Londonderry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh.

“We, as a Service, are guided by the Licensing (NI) Order 1996 and the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) Regulations NI 2020 to ensure laws are upheld and people are kept safe.

“We have been, and we will continue to work with licensees across Northern Ireland to ensure our community can socialise in a safe environment.

“Where we receive complaints, we will engage with licensees around potential breaches of both the Licensing (NI) Order 1996 and the Health Protection (Coronavirus Restrictions) Regulations NI 2020.

“Where appropriate, advice and guidance will be provided to ensure the continued safe and peaceful enjoyment of services.

“Our approach has always been Engage, Explain, Encourage and Enforce, if required.”

This latest figure from police comes amid an ongoing Executive meeting where the issue of wet pubs is on the agenda.

This week's reopening of drink only pubs was postponed due to the continuing spread of COVID-19.

Robin Swann says he feels for the responsible publicans who are currently shut and respecting the guidance:
