Shooting in Derry/Londonderry treated as attempted murder

Q Radio News

Detectives are treating a shooting in the Waterside area of Derry/Londonderry last night as attempted murder.

It happened after two masked men, one armed with a gun, entered a house in the Margaret Street area at around 8.45pm.

Earlier, police said a 30-year-old man who was inside the property, was shot in both legs.

However, they are now saying he was shot at while attempting to flee and sustained an injury to his foot, which he is receiving medical treatment for in hospital.

A 58-year-old man who was in the kitchen was also shot at but wasn't physically injured.

Three other occupants, a woman and two men, were in the house at the time of the attack and were left "extremely" shaken by the ordeal.

Detective Inspector Michael Winters said, "Both suspects then fled, possibly in a car.

"The gunman is described as being of medium to heavy build, and had his face covered.

"The second suspect is described as being of a thinner build.

"We are working to establish a motive for what was a merciless attack.

"There is absolutely no justification for this type of brutality, and it is only by sheer luck that we are not dealing with a tragic situation today."

Anyone with information is urged to contact the PSNI at Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 1838 08/10/19 or information can also be given anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
