Cliftonville and Dungannon Swifts both got six goals on their way to the quarter-finals

Linfield were the big casualties in the last 16 of the Northern Ireland League Cup.

They lost 4-1 away to Ballymena United, the team managed by former Blues boss David Jeffrey.

It was the first time Jeffrey had faced his former club since taking over at the Showgrounds in March.

Linfield played the last half hour with 10 men after Ross Gaynor was sent off when the referee gave him a second yellow card for diving.

Also last night, a hat-trick from John McGuigan helped Championship side Warrenpoint Town beat last season's finalists Ards 4-2 after extra-time in Bangor.

There was also a treble for David McDaid as holders Cliftonville eased into the quarter-finals with a 6-0 victory away to Annagh United.

League leaders Crusaders needed two goals in the last four minutes to snatch a dramatic 4-3 victory against the league's bottom club Portadown at Shamrock Park.

Ports boss Pat McGibbon says the performance was a major boost for the club (in a week when it was confirmed they would be docked 12 points by the Irish FA.

In the other third round ties, Dungannon Swifts beat Ballinamallard 6-1 at Stangmore Park.

Coleraine had a 3-0 home win against Knockbreda while Carrick were 2-0 winners at Armagh City.

And Glenavon beat Harland and Wolff Welders 4-2 at Mourneview Park.
