Covid-19: Four deaths, 1,464 new cases diagnosed

Four more people have died with Covid-19 and 1,464 new cases have been diagnosed, the Department of Health has confirmed.

There are 340 people in hospital who have tested positive for Covid-19, of whom 28 are receiving specialist care in ICU.

All but four of those people are being ventilated. 

The infection rate across Northern Ireland is 614.8 per 100,000 people with Antrim and Newtownabbey council area recording the highest rate (703.8), followed by Mid Ulster (684) and Newry Mourne and Down (680.4).

Derry City and Strabane has the lowest infection rate (469.3).

Children aged 10 to 14 continue to be the age group with the highest number of new cases in the past seven days (17.6%).

The death toll stands at 2,873 with 29 of those deaths occurring in the past seven days.

There are outbreaks in 32 care homes. 

Meanwhile, Health Minister Robin Swann and the Republic's Health Minister Stephen Donnelly have both said they expect the Omicron variant of Covid-19 is already circulating on the island of Ireland.

And in the Republic a further 4,607 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed.

At 8am today, there were 579 Covid-positive patients in hospital, of whom 115 were in intensive care.
