One person has died as a result of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.

A further 992 positive cases of the virus have also been recorded in the same period.

To date, a total of 2,528,747 vaccines have been administered in Northern Ireland.

The latest update from the Department comes as excitement grows over a new anti-viral pill which could treat Covid-19.

The UK government has shown interest in an antiviral pill for Covid-19, which could apparently cut hospitalisations and deaths by half.

The chair of Britain's antivirals taskforce has hinted it could buy the drug following the clinical trial results, which experts are calling "very encouraging".

It would be the first medication of its kind for coronavirus, if approved.
