A review of rail travel between Belfast, Dublin and Cork by the Irish government  is to be widened to include Derry/Londonderry and Limerick.

The review expands on a commitment under the New Decade, New Approach agreement to examine the feasibility of a high/higher speed rail link.

Infrastructure minister Nichola Mallon says with the climate crisis she's committed to working with colleagues north and south to deliver clean and green transport on the island of Ireland...

“I welcome the plan announced today by the Irish Government and in particular their pledges in relation to rail connectivity and delivery of an All Island greenway network.

I have huge ambitions for our rail network on our island and I have already jointly committed with the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan to an All Island Strategic Rail Review which will consider how the rail network on the island of Ireland can improve sustainable connectivity between major cities, enhance regional accessibility including to the North West and support balanced regional development.

In addition, the Review will consider the feasibility of high-higher speeds on the network and whether there is a potential to increase use of the network for freight.

This review expands on the commitment under the New Decade, New Approach agreement to examine the feasibility of a high/higher speed rail link between Belfast, Dublin and Cork by now including Derry and Limerick.

There are real opportunities for communities across Ireland and significant benefits that a better connected island could bring not just to people but also for our economy and environment.

With the Climate Crisis and the immediate challenges facing our natural environment I am committed to working with colleagues north and south to deliver clean and green transport on the island of Ireland.

The plans announced are another important step forward in delivering for all our citizens.”
