Glentoran are through to the quarter-finals of the BetMcLean League Cup after beating Coleraine 3-2 on penalties at the Oval on Tuesday night. 

It had finished 3-3 after extra-time.

Glens boss Ronnie McFall was delighted with the dramatic victory, but says it should never have reached a shoot-out as two goals scored by Stripes sub Jamie McGonigle were dubious...

Curtis Allen struck twice for the Glens, with ex-Celtic midfielder John Herron also claiming a goal to equalise after an opener from Coleraine's Josh Carson...

Bannsiders boss Rodney McAree felt his team was the better side and said it was a cruel way to miss out...

The Glens have a home tie against Crusaders in the last eight on November 13th.


Linfield will go to Portadown after both teams won on Tuesday night. 

The Championship side beat Newry 4-1 on penalties at the Showgrounds (1-1 AET) while David Healy's men eased to a 5-0 success against Institute at Windsor Park - Niall Quinn and Andy Waterworth both scored twice.

In other football news, the Irish FA and Football Association of Ireland are set to launch a joint bid to stage a future Under-21 European Championship.

An announcement's due to be made on Thursday. 

Glenavon's Gary Hamilton is the latest name to be linked with the managerial vacancy at Derry City.

The Lurgan Blues beat Loughgall 3-2 in the Euro Elextrix Mid-Ulster Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday after being 2-0 down at Mourneview Park.

And in the Eventsec North West Senior Cup it finished Limavady United 4 Moyola Park 1.
